AWS ramps, or Automatic Warning System ramps, are critical safety components used in railway systems to enhance train driver awareness. They consist of a physical in-track device that interacts with a train's onboard equipment as the train passes over it. Positioned before signals, the AWS ramp alerts the driver about upcoming signals or speed restrictions. If the signal is clear, the system issues a bell sound; if caution is needed, a horn sounds, prompting the driver to acknowledge it. Failure to do so activates an automatic brake. AWS ramps are vital in preventing signal passed at danger (SPAD) incidents, increasing railway safety.
