Product Info

The RailRoad Class 73 diesel has been used for both passenger and freight trains over the years, so our replica is suited to many model railway layouts. It has a three pole motor and comes fitted with a 21-pin plug, so you can run it on DCC or with our HM7000 Bluetooth-controlled system, and a speaker for authentic railway sounds.

History

Introduced by BR in 1963, what is now known as the Class 73 is an electro-diesel locomotive, which are also referred to as EDs. As well as operating on the Southern Region’s 650-750v DC third-rail network, these locomotives have a 600hp diesel engine, allowing them to work over non-electrified routes and into sidings and yards where there isn’t a third rail power source. From new, all 49 locomotives were fitted for push-pull working with Southern Region multiple units.

No. 73128 is owned by GBRf and has been painted in the attractive red, white and blue retro livery of former BR sector Network SouthEast and was named ‘Kent & East Sussex Railway’ at Robertsbridge in honour of the heritage line’s 50th anniversary in June 2024.
